The Nigerian film industry is in mourning following the reported death of beloved actor Alex Ekubo, who has passed away at the age of 40. The news has sent shockwaves through Nollywood, with colleagues and fans taking to social media to express their grief and disbelief.

Multiple news outlets, citing industry sources, report that Ekubo passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at a hospital in Lagos. It is believed he had been quietly battling a prolonged illness, with some sources identifying the cause as complications from kidney cancer.

The report provides a somber explanation for Ekubo’s extended absence from the public eye. His last post on social media was in December 2024, leading to growing concern among his fans. It is further reported that he was rushed to the hospital on Monday, May 11, and placed on life support before passing away the following afternoon. The news was first signalled by filmmaker Samuel Olatunji and has since been corroborated by major national news outlets.

An outpouring of tributes is flooding social media from his peers. Actress Funke Akindele shared an emotional message, writing, “I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best”. Actor Godwin Nnadiekwe described the loss as devastating, adding, “Nollywood has lost a rare soul”. Actor Bolanle Ninalowo, currently in the United States, also expressed his shock and offered prayers for the family. Fans are also celebrating his legacy, remembering him for his charisma, fashion sense, and many memorable roles.

Born on April 10, 1986, Alexx Ekubo rose to fame as the first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria contest. He quickly became a staple of the “New Nollywood” era, starring in over 100 films. His work included popular titles such as The Bling Lagosians, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, and A Sunday Affair, earning him a reputation as a charismatic and versatile leading man.

As of press time, Ekubo’s family has yet to release an official statement regarding his death or funeral arrangements.
