Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Ayra Starr made her long‑awaited debut on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series on June 8, 2026, delivering a raw, powerhouse performance that kicked off the platform’s Black Music Month celebration in partnership with BET.

Fulfilling a dream she had held since she was 14, the 23‑year‑old singer traded her signature high‑fashion looks for a simple black sweatsuit, letting her voice take centre stage.

Backed by an elite live band, she moved seamlessly through an eight‑song set that included global hits like “Rush” and “Commas,” fan favourites “Birds Sing of Money,” “Gimme Dat,” and “Amin,” plus an unreleased preview from her upcoming album, Starrgirl, titled “Tornado.”

The performance highlighted her distinct, deep‑toned live vocals, blending Afro‑fusion grooves with dreamy soundscapes.

The band featured keys by Philip Cornish, guitar by Vin Landolfi, and background vocals by Dominique Treadwell and Elyscia.

Fans and critics alike have already hailed it as one of the most memorable Tiny Desk appearances of the year.
