Veteran journalist and former presidential adviser Reuben Abati has called on Nigerians to support Mexico in the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening match, instead of fellow African nation South Africa, citing ongoing xenophobic attacks against Nigerian citizens in South Africa.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Abati referenced the anti‑foreigner violence that has forced Nigeria to evacuate hundreds of its nationals. “Why should we support South Africa? They say we don’t like them, they say we are doing their job. Let’s not do their job… I think we will be safer to support Mexico,” he said.
His remarks tapped into a viral sentiment among many Nigerian football fans who have jokingly adopted Mexican alter‑egos for the tournament to protest regional hostility.
Abati expressed sadness over the division, noting that Africa ought to be united, but that current reality reflects a departure from what the continent’s forefathers fought for.
Mexico faces South Africa in the tournament opener at the Estadio Azteca on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
