Spotify announces DM feature as competition heats up in music streaming

Do you remember when Spotify discontinued its in-app messaging back in 2017? Well, it’s back, and this time, the streaming giant is betting big that you’ll actually use it.

Starting this week, listeners 16+ (on both free and premium plans) in select markets will be able to chat and swap tracks directly inside the app. Think of it as turning your Spotify queue into a group chat with vibes.

Why now? For one, Spotify’s flexing a monster user base — nearly 700 million people worldwide — and aiming for a cool one billion. With rising competition from Apple Music, YouTube, and Amazon Music, making Spotify feel more like a hangout spot than just a playlist app suddenly becomes more sensible.

Spotify’s been quietly beefing up its platform with video, price hikes (yeah, those too), and new podcast monetization options. But let’s be honest, sharing a song lyric mid-convo just hits different.

Spotify wants you to listen to music should be as social as scrolling TikTok or WhatsApp. Now it’s up to us to decide if we’ll actually slide into those Spotify DMs this time.
