South African influencer Ashley Brylnn Ogle arrived at the 2026 AMVCA wearing ancestry.
“I’m just a girl from a gully in KZN, South Africa. Richly blessed in assorted roots,” she said. “Tonight I get to experience some of those roots in Nigeria through entertainment and our African superstars.”
Styled by Magnus, the look was crafted by Lagos‑based Estaz, a sustainable couture house. The foundation is a sculptural burlap corset hand‑beaded to mimic Zulu beadwork.
At the back, tiny beaded figures of Zulu dancers tell a story. The skirt and cape are panels of real Nguni cowhide – sacred to Zulu culture – mixed with hand‑woven Aso‑oke, wrapped like a traditional isidwaba.
The all‑Nigerian glam squad delivered: makeup by Bibyonce (bronzey glam, berry lip), hair by Hairbykold (slick curly updo). For the final look, Ashley added a full cowrie‑shell headpiece – hundreds of shells cascading like a veil, a nod to ancestral wealth.
Shot against a moody grey backdrop, portraits show her front‑facing with a cape draped like wings, a back view revealing the dancing Zulu figures, and a close‑up smiling under the cowrie crown.
Ashley brought Durban to Lagos – honouring the Nguni cow, Zulu beadwork, and the strength of KwaZulu‑Natal women. That’s how you turn a red carpet into a prayer.
