Nigerian singer Habeeb Badmus, known as Portable, welcomed a newborn baby boy just hours after losing a celebrity boxing match to skit maker Carter Efe.

The timing was dramatic: Portable’s wife, Omobewaji Ewatomi, was in labour while he was still in the ring at the “Chaos in the Ring 4” event at Balmoral Hall, Victoria Island. Portable lost by unanimous decision, alleging the fight was “unfair” and that he was “cheated” due to Carter Efe’s reach advantage.

But the singer quickly shifted focus to fatherhood. The child has been named Jamal Iremide, also referred to as Fijabi Tekunbi Oriyomi.

“I value that [my child] more than a belt. You can buy the belt, but not my child,” Portable said. “You people cheated. I thought I was going to dance with my belt, but I ended up with my new baby.”

The birth is Portable’s third child with his first wife. Despite the defeat, he celebrated: “Any disappointment is a blessing. Congratulations to my family and me.” He was later seen visiting the newborn while carrying his previous championship belts.
