Casablanca roared, but it was the Super Falcons who silenced the night with a last-gasp stunner.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have booked their spot in the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final after a dramatic 2-1 victory over defending champions South Africa in a pulsating semifinal clash in Casablanca.
In a high-stakes encounter that lived up to its billing, Nigeria struck first in the 44th minute when captain Rasheedat Ajibade confidently converted from the penalty spot, sending South Africa’s Andile Dlamini the wrong way after a handball incident in the box.
But Banyana Banyana clawed their way back early in the second half. At the 59th minute, Linda Mothlalo leveled the scoreline for South Africa, also from the spot, after Nigeria’s Christy Ucheibe was adjudged to have brought down Thembi Kgatlana.
Just when extra time seemed inevitable, Nigeria produced a miracle. Deep into stoppage time—90+4 minutes—Michelle Alozie launched a long ball from deep within her half. What seemed like a hopeful clearance morphed into a golden moment as the ball soared untouched, caught South Africa’s defense off guard, and kissed the back of the net. Casablanca erupted. Nigeria led 2-1.
That late drama sealed a heart-pounding victory and confirmed Nigeria’s return to the WAFCON final, where they’ll now seek a record-extending 10th continental crown.
The victory also symbolized payback for the Super Falcons, who were knocked out by South Africa in the WAFCON 2022 semifinals. This time, it was grit, grace, and a touch of destiny.
With Ajibade leading by example and Alozie playing heroine once more, Nigeria’s golden generation is reminding the continent who still wears the crown.
