(NIGERIA 24) – The Super Eagles delivered a dominant and clinical performance, defeating Mozambique 4-0 in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 Round of 16 match at the Complexe Sportif de Fès on Monday.
The commanding victory secures Nigeria a spot in the last eight, where they will face the winner of the match between Algeria and DR Congo.
Nigeria asserted their dominance early, with Ademola Lookman finding the net in the 20th minute with a superb finish. Star striker Victor Osimhen quickly doubled the lead just five minutes later. Osimhen was not done, adding his second goal immediately after the break in the 47th minute to put the game beyond reach. Akor Adams completed the rout in the 75th minute, lashing home a powerful strike for his first goal of the tournament.
The Super Eagles’ flawless run continues, having won all three of their group-stage matches and now their knockout tie, making them the tournament’s highest-scoring team with 12 goals so far. Despite minor defensive lapses in the group stage, the defence held firm tonight, securing a crucial clean sheet.
Coach Eric Chelle, who was named Coach of the Group Stage, has instilled discipline and an attacking identity in the squad.
The team’s depth was on display, with both Lookman and Adams finishing the match with a goal and two assists each after Adams came off the bench.
This comprehensive win exorcises the ghosts of their early exit in 2021 and sends a strong message to their quarter-final opponents as Nigeria pursues its fourth AFCON title.
