Former US President Barack Obama has released his annual year-end favourites list, and Nigerian artists are a standout feature, highlighting the global ascent of Afrobeats.
In a statement on social media, Obama noted he is “continuing a tradition that I started during my time in the White House” by sharing his lists of favourite music, movies, and books.
The 2025 music playlist prominently includes three major Nigerian tracks: Burna Boy’s “Tatata” featuring Travis Scott, Olamide’s “99” featuring Asake, Seyi Vibez, and Young Jonn, and Obongjayar’s “Not In Surrender”. Their inclusion alongside international stars like Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, and BLACKPINK underscores Nigeria’s dominant position in contemporary pop culture.
This official recognition is highly significant. Obama’s curated lists have become known as a “kingmaker” for artists, often leading to a dramatic surge in global streams and visibility.

By spotlighting a new generation of Nigerian talent, from mainstream giants to critically acclaimed artists like Obongjayar, the former president’s endorsement powerfully affirms the genre’s worldwide influence and cultural reach.
