Today, MTV and CBS unveiled the eagerly awaited full nominees lineup for the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, including the prestigious Best Afrobeats category. African talent dominates, showcasing a year of boundary-breaking collaborations and solo brilliance.

Here are the nominees for Best Afrobeats Video:
• Asake & Travis Scott – “Active”: A dynamic fusion of Afrobeats and trap, hailed for its genre-bending energy. 
• Burna Boy ft. Travis Scott – “TaTaTa”: A big-stadium anthem that unites Nigerian groove with Travis Scott’s star power. 
• Moliy, Silent Addy, Skillibeng & Shenseea – “Shake It to the Max (FLY) (Remix)”: Multi-nation collab bringing dancehall and Afrobeats flair. 
• Rema – “Baby (Is It a Crime)”: The Nigerian breakout star returns with a solo track that blends romance and rhythm. 
• Tems ft. Asake – “Get It Right”: Emotional depth meets melodic artistry, from two of Nigeria’s boldest voices. 
• Tyla – “PUSH 2 START”: South African rising star Tyla represents Amapiano-infused Afrobeats. 
• Wizkid ft. Brent Faiyaz – “Piece of My Heart”: A lush, cross-continent collab highlighting smooth vocals and Afrobeats harmony.

This marks another sweeping year for African music, with multiple nominations signaling the genre’s global rise. Notably, Asake and Burna Boy each earn two nods, underlining their dominance and cross-border appeal.

The Bigger Picture: VMAs 2025 Landscape

The VMAs, hosted at UBS Arena in New York on September 7, will air live on CBS and stream on MTV and Paramount+ in over 150 countries. Voting for fans closes on September 5. 

While Lady Gaga leads overall nominations with 12, Afrobeats stands out as one of the genre categories with the most buzz, proof that global audiences have fully embraced African sounds.

African Category Highlights

What’s exciting is the variety—Active represents high-energy fusion, Shake It to the Max celebrates Jamaican/Nigerian synergy, PUSH 2 START brings South African heat, and Piece of My Heart fuses Nigerian songwriting with American R&B sophistication.

When and where will the 2025 VMAs air?

The VMAs will return live from UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on Sunday, September 7 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. The show will air coast-to-coast on CBS, simulcast on MTV, and stream live on Paramount+ in the U.S.

How can fans vote?

Fan voting is now open at vote.mtv.com and will remain active until Thursday, September 5 at 6 p.m. ET. The Best New Artist category will stay open through the live show. Song of the Year nominees will be narrowed down to six on August 18 at 12 p.m. ET, with voting for that category continuing alongside the others. Fans can also cast additional votes for Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Best New Artist by commenting under the pinned posts on the @VMAs Instagram using artist-specific hashtags through August 8.

This year’s “Power Hour,” presented by BACARDÍ Rum, gives fans double votes across all categories daily from 1–2 p.m. ET between August 7 and September 4.

Additional details about the 2025 VMAs, including performer announcements, honorees, social category nominees, and more surprises, are expected to roll out in the coming weeks. With 66 million interactions, last year’s broadcast broke the record for most social interactions in VMA history. With this year’s lineup and fresh talent, MTV looks to raise the bar yet again.
