Nigerian chef Rita Igbinoba has officially advanced to the Top 20 of MasterChef: Global Gauntlet, earning her white apron with a daring fusion dish that blended West African heritage with classical Italian technique.
Representing Team Africa, the 24‑year‑old HR case manager from Brooklyn presented a “Jollof Risotto” paired with Suya‑spiced steak and broccolini.
Judge Joe Bastianich called the concept a “massive risk,” noting that risotto has been a “killer” in the MasterChef kitchen for nearly two decades. Yet he praised her “righteous” technique and voted yes.
Gordon Ramsay initially questioned the unconventional fusion but admitted the Nigerian spice profile was “delicious” and commended the perfectly cooked steak. Tiffany Derry also offered her support, leading to a unanimous decision to award Igbinoba the coveted apron.
Originally from Benin City, Edo State, Igbinoba told the judges her inspiration came from a visit to an Italian restaurant at age 15. “I’m taking the flavour of jollof rice and infusing it into risotto,” she said. Her success has been widely celebrated online alongside fellow Nigerian contestant Peter Olaniyi, who also advanced to the Top 20.
As a member of Team Africa, Igbinoba now competes for the $250,000 grand prize (approximately ₦370 million). The competition has moved past auditions, with the Top 20 now facing challenges designed to test their ability to elevate cultural flavours on a global stage.
Fans can follow Rita’s journey on MasterChef: Global Gauntlet, airing Wednesdays on FOX and streaming on Hulu.
