South Africans have not slept this week. Not because of load shedding, but over the Nigerians claiming their foremost disk jockey.
The chaos started when a video surfaced of Amapiano kingpin DJ Maphorisa at Fusion Vibes Kitchen and Lounge in Texas, plates in front of him, minding his business and clearing what witnesses describe as a serious plate of traditional Nigerian fufu and jollof. He looked happy. Comfortable. Like a man who knew exactly what he was doing.
That was all it took.
Within hours, Mzansi’s finest internet detectives had launched a full heritage investigation. Timeline after timeline filled with the same question, typed in all caps: IS PHORI NIGERIAN?
Some claimed it was the confidence. The technique. The way he folded the swallow, dipped it, and moved like a man who grew up doing this at family gatherings in Nigeria. South Africans said they had never seen him eat pap with that much conviction.
He has not responded to the rumours. He rarely does. He just keeps eating.
Now, to be fair, the venue he chose was never going to help his case. Fusion Vibes Kitchen + Lounge, in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, is owned by William “Will” Aiyeojenku — a Nigerian-born, London-and-New-York-raised finance and accounting veteran who opened the spot on 18 April 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic, in honour of his late mother.
So Maphorisa walked into a Nigerian-owned restaurant, ordered the most Nigerian dish on the menu, enjoyed it thoroughly, and then went about his evening in a lounge that blends fine dining with nightlife like it was designed for exactly this kind of video.
The question remains unanswered. Maphorisa has not released a statement. No DNA test has been announced. No family members have come forward. But the man did clean his plate, and Mzansi witnessed it in realtime.
Until he speaks, the theory lives. And South Africa will keep checking his posts for answer.
