Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has ignited a fresh debate about American soccer knowledge, claiming that fewer than a dozen people in the United States had ever heard of Côte d’Ivoire before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a post on X on June 15, Portnoy wrote: “There can’t be more than 11 people in the United States who knew what Côte d’Ivoire was before the World Cup.”

The comment, made in his characteristic deadpan style, quickly drew a wave of reactions from fans who pointed out that the West African nation — known as the Ivory Coast — has been a regular fixture in World Cups and is one of Africa’s most recognised footballing nations, thanks in large part to legendary players like Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré.

One critic responded: “Vastly underestimating the amount of FIFA addicts who manned the Ivory Coast. Shoutout Drogba.” Another noted: “I actually think Ivory Coast is one of the most iconic soccer teams that many casuals even know because of prime Drogba and Yaya.”

Portnoy, who has admitted to catching “World Cup fever” for the first time in his life, has been a regular presence throughout the tournament, offering unfiltered takes on teams, fans, and the American soccer experience.

The exchange highlights a recurring theme of the 2026 tournament: American fans encountering nations they know little about, while seasoned football followers remind them that the world of football extends far beyond the United States’ borders.
