Ayra Starr finally opened up about the health battle she kept private for weeks. The 24-year-old Afrobeats superstar revealed that her recent major surgery was to treat endometriosis, a chronic condition affecting millions of women worldwide.
She initially announced the procedure on July 30, sharing photos from a hospital bed and apologizing to her fans for her reduced online presence. But she kept the specific reason private—until now.
On September 1, she confirmed the details on Instagram. The surgery was more complex than anticipated, requiring extended bed rest. But the “Starrgirl” didn’t stop. Despite the pain, she pushed through a grueling promotional schedule for her third album, Starrgirl, performing at London’s All Points East festival and making live appearances on U.S. programs like the Today show.
“Every time I partied or moved too much, I’d be back to square one in a lot of pain,” she later shared.

Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the womb, leading to severe pelvic pain, intense cramps, and potential fertility challenges. While outward incisions heal within weeks, internal deep tissue recovery can take six to eight weeks.
