It was a celebration of grace, law, and royalty as the 14th Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge (SAN), marked his 70th birthday, a milestone he described as “A Platinum Season of Grace.” The event, a profound blend of spiritual gratitude and royal celebration, brought together the highest echelons of Delta State’s political and traditional leadership.

The celebrations commenced with a Thanksgiving Mass at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, where the scholar-king was joined by a host of distinguished guests, including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

Following the mass, a grand reception was held at the Dome Event Centre, where sons and daughters of the Asaba Kingdom (Ani Ahaba) and Delta State gathered to honor their monarch.

In his remarks, the Asagba expressed deep humility and gratitude for the journey. “At 70, I stand humbled by God’s mercy and strengthened by the unwavering loyalty of the Asaba Kingdom,” he stated.

Reflecting on his reign, which officially began with his coronation in August 2024, Prof. Azinge emphasized the core values of his leadership. “The harmony among our people, the support of our leaders, and the love shown by our community continually inspire my commitment to serve with wisdom and dignity.”

The Asagba, a legal titan and former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), ascended the throne following a rigorous selection process by the five quarters of the kingdom. His reign is widely seen as the beginning of a new era of enlightened leadership for the ancient kingdom.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, speaking at the event, lauded the Asagba’s character, noting that his tribute “reflected the values I hold dear—peace, humility, unity, and devoted service to our people.”

The Asagba, in turn, acknowledged the profound “warmth and goodwill” expressed by Okowa and his family, and the honor shown by all who attended, reinforcing the event’s theme of unity.

He concluded with a royal blessing, reaffirming his paternal role over his domain: “May God bless Delta State. May peace and progress remain the heritage of Ani Ahaba.”
