Nigerian screen icon Genevieve Nnaji has been cast in Wahala, the upcoming six‑part BBC thriller adapted from Nikki May’s debut novel, marking her latest international television role.
The series, written and co‑directed by BAFTA‑nominated filmmaker Theresa Ikoko, centres on four Nigerian‑British women in their thirties navigating careers, love, and family in present‑day London, while dark secrets from their childhood homes threaten to unravel their lives. Wahala – a Nigerian word meaning ‘trouble’ – promises a gripping, surprising ride.

Nnaji joins a stellar female‑led ensemble that includes Deborah Ayorinde, Adelayo Adedayo, Cush Jumbo, and Susan Wokoma. Made by Firebird Pictures (part of BBC Studios) for BBC One and iPlayer, the six‑part thriller will be handled globally by BBC Studios.
Alongside Ikoko, Remie Weekes and Leonora Lonsdale will also direct.
The casting of Nnaji, a beloved Nollywood legend and director of the acclaimed Lionheart, signals the BBC’s continued commitment to African storytelling and diaspora talent.
Production dates have not yet been announced, but anticipation is already high for this exploration of friendship, identity, and buried truths.
