Sudanese supermodel Anok Yai arrived at the 2026 Met Gala in a look that didn’t just wear art — it wept it.

Embracing the “Costume Art” theme, Yai stepped onto the white carpet in a custom Balenciaga creation by Pierpaolo Piccioli: a dramatic, hooded black dress that flowed like “liquid art.”

The gown’s sculptural silhouette hugged her frame before pooling into a train, while a matching hood framed her face.

But the true showstopper was her beauty look. Makeup artists painted tear trails streaming down her cheeks, turning her face into a living bronze statue in mourning. The choice echoed her recent closing walk for Vetements’ Spring/Summer 2026 show, where she portrayed a bride transitioning into a widow — a metaphor for global fragility.

“Costume Art is about fashion as performance,” Yai told reporters. “I wanted to tell a story.”

The appearance follows a landmark year: Yai was named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2026 and took home “Model of the Year 2025.”

At the Met Gala, co‑chaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour, Yai proved once again that the most powerful accessory is emotion.

No heels required — just tears, and truth.
