Dogs paraded in traditional Nigerian crowns, capes, and designer outfits as the annual Lagos Dog Carnival returned, celebrating the country’s growing pet culture in its bustling commercial capital.
The event, now in its fifth year, drew hundreds of canines and their owners for a day of festivities centred on the theme “Wazobia”—a pidgin term celebrating Nigeria’s unity in diversity.

Organiser Jackie Idimogu explained that the carnival provides a dedicated space for “dog dads and dog mums” to celebrate their beloved “paw babies”. Beyond the vibrant runway show, which featured breeds from Pomeranians to Cane Corsos, the event included educational segments on pet care, training, and adoption. A Lhasa Apso won the best-dressed prize for its traditional Igbo attire.
The 2023 carnival also carried a deeper message of national unity, intentionally organised to celebrate Nigeria’s togetherness following a divisive presidential election that highlighted ethnic fault lines.
For participants like entrepreneur Didi Afe, the atmosphere was “amazing,” highlighting the event’s role in fostering a vibrant, educated, and joyful community of pet lovers in Lagos.
