In the quiet dignity of tradition, where honour comes not from applause but from heritage, a new chapter has been written for one of Nigeria’s most storied families.

The Yabo Traditional Institution in Sokoto State has officially honoured Zainab Muktari with the traditional title of Zinariyar Yabo — the “Golden Woman of Yabo”. The investiture, conferred in October 2026 under the leadership of His Highness, Muhammadu Sani Bello Yabo (Sarkin Kabin Yabo), recognises her extensive contributions to the Yabo Emirate, her dedication to community service, and her deep, genuine relationship with the local people.

It is a title that carries weight, and she has earned it.

A Daughter of History

To understand Zainab, you must understand the soil she comes from. She is the daughter of Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, the former Deputy Governor of Sokoto State and former Minister of Water Resources — a man whose public service has shaped the state for years. She is also a granddaughter of Nigeria’s Second Republic President, the late Shehu Shagari, a name that remains synonymous with integrity, humility, and national service.

But lineage alone does not earn a chieftaincy. Communities confer titles on those who show up — who serve, who listen, who remain connected. The Zinariyar Yabo title speaks to that: a golden woman not simply by blood, but by deed.

The Ceremony and Its Meaning

The investiture was a gathering of tradition and dignity, as the Yabo Traditional Institution formally recognised her with a title reserved for those whose presence uplifts the emirate. In the language of the North, Zinariya means gold — a symbol of value, rarity, and enduring worth. To be named the Golden Woman of Yabo is to be declared a treasure of the community.

The Sarkin Kabin Yabo, His Highness Alhaji Muhammadu Sani Bello Yabo, presided over the conferment, acknowledging her commitment to the people of Yabo and her consistent contributions to the emirate’s progress.

Education and a Rising Profile

Zainab is an alumna of the Noble Hall Leadership Academy for Girls in Abuja, graduating in 2017 — an institution known for shaping young women of purpose and poise. That foundation has carried into her public life, where she is increasingly regarded as a rising ambassador for her community.

She also belongs to a family that continues to make headlines for the right reasons. Her brother, Muhammed Bello Bala Shagari, has become a prominent voice in youth advocacy, carrying the family’s legacy of service into a new generation. Together, they represent a lineage that is not resting on its name, but actively building on it.

A Title That Binds

Traditional titles in Nigeria are not mere decorations. They are covenants between the honoured and the community — a promise of continued presence, advocacy, and service. By conferring Zinariyar Yabo on Zainab, the Yabo Traditional Institution has placed a mantle on her shoulders and, in doing so, affirmed that she has already proven worthy of it.

For a young woman carrying one of the most recognisable surnames in Nigerian political history, this honour is significant precisely because it is her own. It was not inherited. It was earned.

The Golden Woman of Yabo

As she steps into this new role, Zainab Muktari Shehu Shagari joins a select group of women whose titles reflect not just status, but substance. The Golden Woman of Yabo is now part of her story — a story that continues to unfold with grace, purpose, and a clear connection to the people who matter most.

May the gold only grow brighter.
