In a convergence of high society and global pop culture, Afrobeats superstar Wizkid was inducted as an honorary member of the prestigious Lagos Motor Boat Club (LMBC) during its exclusive New Year’s Eve Gala on December 31, 2025.

The honour was conferred following a headline performance by the Grammy Award-winning artist, who delivered a medley of hits including “Jaiye Jaiye” and “Ojuelegba” to a select audience of members and guests.

Following the performance, the club’s Commodore, identified in recent records as Babasola Alokolaro, formally presented Wizkid with the club’s traditional insignia: a membership certificate and a mariner’s hat.

The ceremony marks the artist’s entry into one of Nigeria’s most guarded institutions, founded in 1950 and recognised for its elite membership.

The induction is a significant accolade for Wizkid, born Ayodeji Balogun, who has risen from the streets of Surulere to become one of Africa’s most decorated artists. He is a Grammy winner, holds multiple BET and MOBO awards, and is the most awarded artist in the history of The Headies.

For the 75-year-old LMBC, bestowing this honour reflects a modernising impulse, connecting its storied legacy with the vibrant energy of Nigeria’s current cultural vanguard.

The event, held at the club’s waterfront headquarters in Ikoyi, underscored a unique moment where Lagos’s historic social establishment formally celebrated one of its most iconic modern sons.
