South African xenophobic mob leader’s economic fantasy shows he doesn’t understand GDP

A self‑appointed leader of xenophobic mobs attacking African immigrants in South Africa has made an economically absurd claim, saying the country is so wealthy it could hand every citizen one million rand annually “for the rest of their lives.”

Speaking to Vanslive News during the latest wave of anti‑foreigner violence, the man declared: “South Africa is so rich… almost 100 million people… the GDP is more than billions of rands. If we come together, this country can afford to give every South African 1 million rand a year.”

His statement reveals staggering ignorance. South Africa’s GDP is approximately R7 trillion. Dividing that equally among 60 million citizens would yield roughly R116,000 per person — not one million. To give every citizen R1 million would require a GDP of R60 trillion, nearly nine times the current economy.

Yet this man is leading mobs to loot shops, burn goods, and attack hardworking African traders — many from Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Malawi — who contribute to the very economy he misunderstands.

“This is not leadership; it is demagoguery wrapped in economic fantasy,” said a political analyst. “He is using false numbers to fuel hatred against the very people who keep local economies running.”

The mob leader’s bizarre rant suggests that instead of demanding competent governance, he prefers to blame foreigners and promise impossible riches.

South Africans deserve better than lies wrapped in xenophobia. The only thing that needs a million rand retirement is his dangerous, baseless rhetoric.
