A powerful short film tackling the often-minimised health issue of uterine fibroids has launched on Disney+, driven by the vision of Nigerian filmmaker Joan Iyiola.
Her directorial debut, Mango, is a body horror story about a London florist whose body betrays her as doctors dismiss her pain.
The project gains significant advocacy with acclaimed Kaduna-born actress Wunmi Mosaku joining as an executive producer. Mosaku, recently BAFTA-longlisted, praised the film as “visceral and urgently needed,” highlighting its transformation of a personal health struggle into poignant art.
The film carries deep personal and cultural resonance. Iyiola has publicly shared her own fibroid journey, joining global voices like Lupita Nyong’o to spotlight a condition that disproportionately affects Black women.
By bringing this story to a platform like Disney+, the Nigerian-led team aims to foster wider understanding and change in how women’s pain is perceived and treated globally.
