The Green Falcons of Nigeria began their 2026 International Rugby League (IRL) Women’s World Series campaign with a thunderous statement, crushing Ghana’s Leopardess 40–0 in the opening match of the Alaro City International Rugby Friendlies. The clash, held at the brand-new Alaro City International Rugby Pitch, was a celebration of African strength, unity, and the rise of women’s rugby on the continent.

The atmosphere was electric as fans waved flags and chanted from the sidelines, witnessing the Falcons put on a masterclass of precision, pace, and teamwork. From the first whistle, Nigeria’s dominance was clear; their line speed, coordination, and attacking structure overwhelmed the Ghanaian defense.
Team captain Chioma Ugwu led by example, powering through tackles and inspiring the team’s relentless tempo. The Falcons’ backline dazzled, converting their superior possession into tries that kept the crowd on its feet.

This victory carries a deeper meaning; no African women’s team has ever qualified for rugby’s global stage, until now. By defeating Kenya earlier this year, Nigeria’s Green Falcons secured their place at the first-ever Rugby League World Series, marking a new dawn for African women in the sport.
As part of their World Cup preparations, the team will continue their friendly series against Ghana with Match 2 scheduled for Saturday, October 11, at 12 PM, also at Alaro City. Entry is free, inviting fans to be part of the history in motion.
