Award-winning filmmaker Kunle Afolayan‘s acclaimed franchise, Aníkúlápó, is poised for a grand return. Afolayan has officially announced that Aníkúlápó: The Series Season 2 will premiere globally on January 30, 2026, continuing its record-breaking run on the streaming platform.
The new season promises to expand the epic saga’s rich mythology. Filmed across Oyo State in Nigeria and Ghana, the storyline is set to venture beyond the borders of the Oyo Empire, delving into profound historical themes, including the transatlantic slave trade. This expansion underscores Afolayan’s vision of creating a vast, culturally rooted cinematic universe.
The franchise has proven to be a monumental success for Netflix. The original 2022 film debuted as the platform’s #1 most-watched non-English film globally, amassing over 8.7 million viewing hours in its first week. Its successor, Aníkúlápó: Rise of the Spectre (Season 1), enjoyed a sustained presence in Netflix’s Global Top 10 for non-English TV after its March 2024 debut.
Season 2 will feature the return of fan favourites Bimbo Ademoye and Sola Sobowale, alongside new cast members including KieKie (Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori) and Saga (Adeoluwa Okusaga).
This highly anticipated release solidifies Aníkúlápó as a flagship African original series on the world stage.
