Gospel artist and inaugural Nigerian Idol winner Yeka Onka will perform the national anthem at the Houston Rockets’ third annual Nigerian Heritage Night tonight.
Her selection bridges a journey from a Lagos talent show to a premier NBA arena, symbolising the diaspora’s artistic excellence.
Born in Eastern Nigeria to musician parents, Yeka’s powerful, dynamic voice was forged in churches and crusades, influenced by legends like Onyeka Onwenu. Her 2011 Nigerian Idol victory launched her career, which she has dedicated to gospel music.
After a period of refinement, her 2022 single “I Will Not Fear” became a viral anthem of hope, amassing over 1.6 million YouTube views.
The event, hosted by WNBA star Chiney Ogwumike, celebrates Houston’s large Nigerian community. Yeka’s performance is its emotional centrepiece—a Nigerian musical champion representing national pride on an American sports stage. She is currently finishing a debut album of worship, including tracks like “Odim Ebube.”
The 2026 Nigerian Heritage Night seamlessly blends elite sports, celebrated musical artistry, and deep cultural resonance, offering a moment where national pride and heritage harmonise through the voice of a trailblazing gospel artist.
