In a celebrated nod to his dynamic career shift, acclaimed actor David Oyelowo has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series.

The nomination, announced on January 12, 2026, recognises his lead performance in the Apple TV+ series Government Cheese.

The 57th NAACP Image Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 28, 2026, and will be broadcast on BET and CBS. Oyelowo faces notable competition in his category, including Cedric The Entertainer (The Neighborhood), David Alan Grier (St. Denis Medical), Mike Epps (The Upshaws), and Vince Staples (The Vince Staples Show).

This nomination marks a significant and joyful pivot for Oyelowo, who is widely revered for his powerful dramatic roles in films like Selma and The Butler—both of which previously earned him NAACP Image Awards.

His heartfelt reaction underscored the personal meaning of this recognition. “When I think of our TV show, GOVERNMENT CHEESE, all I think is JOY,” Oyelowo wrote on social media. He extended gratitude to the NAACP and congratulations to his director, Paul Hunter, who also received a nomination for the series.
