Danielle Adewusi reflects on historic Miss Universe Nigeria win

One week after her coronation, Miss Universe Nigeria 2026 Danielle Adewusi has broken her silence with a statement that reads less like a victory speech and more like a manifesto.

“One week ago, I was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2026. To say this is a dream come true is an understatement,” she wrote.

Adewusi thanked God, her family and friends, and the public who embraced her during the competition.

Nigeria, That Is a Promise

She recalled the Top 5 Q&A, where she was asked how she would champion national unity and project Nigeria’s diversity on the international stage.

“I spoke about being that representation and honouring our diversity with pride. I said that I would represent Nigeria with pride, purpose and excellence,” she said. “Nigeria, that is a promise.”

Exactly 35 years ago, her mother, Anthonia Okogbenin, was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 1991. Adewusi now continues that legacy — the first daughter of a former queen to claim the same national title.

But she was quick to widen the frame beyond her family.

“This legacy is bigger than my family and far bigger than myself. This is the 75th Miss Universe. I am competing for a nation of over 200 million people and beyond,” she said.

She dedicated the reign to women told to shrink their dreams, to little girls made to believe their natural hair and traditional styles were not worthy, and to women and girls still denied healthcare and education.

Prepared Longer, Worked Harder

Adewusi said winning the national crown was only the beginning.

“Throughout Miss Universe Nigeria, I was praised for my level of preparation. But I knew that winning the national crown would only be the beginning. I have prepared longer, worked harder and thought more creatively about how I will compete at Miss Universe because Nigeria deserves a representative who is doing everything within her power to bring the crown home,” she said.

She closed with a declaration: “We proved that the crown is medical. Now we enter a new era. Welcome to The Legacy Reign.”

The Look

Adewusi’s coronation portrait has also drawn attention. She wore a floor-length gold and champagne mermaid gown designed by Amyaghomi, a premium Nigerian haute couture brand founded by Amy Aghomi. The brand expanded to London in late September 2026.

The gown is fully encrusted with gold sequins, crystals and beads arranged in vertical Art Deco-inspired lines and geometric patterns. It features a one-shoulder design with a sheer illusion panel, a plunging V-neckline, a fitted corset-style bodice and a high thigh slit on the left leg.

A slight puddle train with sheer beaded detailing pools on the floor. She wears an ornate silver diamond crown with filigree and teardrop gems atop a sleek braided updo with a high top-knot bun. A white satin sash reading “MISS UNIVERSE NIGERIA 2026” drapes across her torso.

Her styling was handled by Maklinscout, the creative direction brand founded by Nigerian stylist Makililo Nelson A., based in Abuja. The portrait was shot by Joseph Iso, known as @boboiso, a Lagos-based celebrity and fashion photographer.
