Nigerian travel content creator Simon Kalu, known as @walkwithsimon, has stirred online conversation after describing Calabar as Nigeria’s unexpected “European side” while touring the South-South region, including Akwa Ibom.
The vlogger, whose mission is to showcase Africa’s underrated destinations, admitted the Cross River State capital left him speechless.
“I came to Calabar expecting just another Nigerian city. Instead, I found a place that completely challenged my expectations,” Kalu shared. “The calm streets, the greenery, the relaxed atmosphere, and the welcoming people made me wonder why more Nigerians aren’t talking about this city.” He noted that parts of the city reminded him of quieter European towns, not due to architecture, but because of the unhurried rhythm of daily life.
Kalu was equally impressed by the local cuisine, declaring that Calabar food “deserves far more recognition,” describing every meal as rich in flavour and freshly prepared. However, the travel vlogger admitted he was caught off guard by the cost of living.
“I expected a calm city to be relatively affordable, but some meals and everyday expenses were noticeably higher than I anticipated,” he said, posing a question to his followers about whether quality of life justifies the price tag.
His reflections, part of a broader exploration of Akwa Ibom and neighbouring states, have reignited discussion about Nigeria’s hidden urban gems.
Kalu concluded that Calabar “isn’t perfect, and it isn’t trying to be,” but remains one of the country’s most underrated destinations.
