In a ceremony rich with cultural pride, the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, gave a heartfelt royal welcome to Afrobeats superstar Asake during the artist’s homecoming to the ancient city.
The Ooni, in a moving address, expressed profound joy in welcoming “my son, Asake, back home to Ile-Ife,” describing the city as the sacred land that shaped the artist’s formative years through “hard work, discipline, and quiet determination.” He emphasised the significance of the return, stating, “To return home after such a journey is a blessing, and I receive him with pride and open arms.”
The monarch extended special gratitude to the pillars of Asake’s success. He praised the singer’s mother as his “steadfast pillar,” thanking her for nurturing him with “love, resilience, and strength.” He also paid tribute to Asake’s manager, Lala, and his entire crew, whose dedication he said “reflects the true spirit of Omoluabi,” a Yoruba term for a person of good character.
Furthermore, the Ooni acknowledged the role of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and Professor Toyin Ogundeji in nurturing “one of the greatest musical icons of our time.” He honoured Asake as a “cultural ambassador who has carried Yoruba heritage onto the global stage.”
The event marks a powerful full-circle moment for the Grammy-nominated artist, symbolising a celebrated connection between his global stardom and his foundational roots. “Today, my son has returned home,” the Ooni declared. “A global star has come back to his roots. Ile-Ife receives you with pride.”
