The costume is a magnificent golden-toned gown, richly textured, and adorned with numerous three-dimensional serpent figures that intricately wrap around the dress and Paula’s form.

A prominent serpent is coiled around her arms and chest, its head held majestically in her hands, while more serpents ascend from her elaborate golden crown, creating a dramatic, towering headpiece. This meticulous design brings to life the essence of Idemili, a powerful river goddess deeply rooted in Igbo mythology, particularly revered in Nnobi, Anambra State, Nigeria.

Idemili is renowned for her association with pythons, specifically the Central African Rock Python, which is considered her sacred symbol. These revered serpents, known as Éké, were traditionally believed to be spiritual guardians dispatched by Idemili to protect her people, with harming them being strictly forbidden as their presence signified a blessing.

Ezendu’s “Idemili” costume masterfully narrates the ancient tale of how, during times of turmoil and chaos, the sacred serpent would appear to guide the community to safety and shield them from unseen forces. The ensemble goes beyond mere aesthetics; it embodies the strength of tradition, the elegance of Nigerian culture, and the timeless power of storytelling through heritage. As Paula herself articulated, this is “not just a costume—it is a legacy worn with pride.”
