Nollywood crime thriller Black Market has officially broken the Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a film screening in a single location.
More than 51,000 people gathered at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos for the historic premiere on Saturday, 26 September 2026.
The event surpassed the previous record of 43,624 attendees, set in 2015 by Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena.
Guinness World Records officially certified 51,000 viewers who remained for the entirety of the screening. Total venue attendance was estimated at 64,000 by Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, who attended the event.
The film is directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay and produced by Nora Awolowo through a collaboration between Rixel Studios, Switch Visuals and FilmOne Studios.
Black Market stars Omowunmi Dada, Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman and Scarlet Gomez. The thriller follows five market women navigating a cross-border smuggling ring amid economic hardship, whose lives unravel after a kidnapping.
The screening was organised with support from the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and corporate partners including MTN, Puma, Swoop, PlaystreetNG, Oraimo and Shuttlers.
The record attempt drew crowds from across Lagos, with long queues forming at TBS hours before the screening began. Celebrities and industry figures were present, including Gabriel Afolayan, Real Warri Pikin and Tomi Ojo.
The certification marks a major moment for Nollywood, placing a Nigerian film at the top of a global record category previously held by an event in the Philippines.
