Team Nigeria triumphed at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China, winning the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category.
The victory, secured between July 10 and 20, marks the country’s debut at the global tournament and instantly establishes Nigeria as a spelling powerhouse.
The quartet of young scholars — Oluwadamilola Adeolu of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti; Abdurrahman Yusuf and Maryam Yusuf, both of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin; and Chinedu Okediachi of Madonna International Schools, Asaba — delivered a dominant performance against teams from across the globe. Abdurrahman and Maryam each added individual medals to the team’s gold haul, underlining the depth of talent Nigeria brought to the competition.
The team’s path to Shanghai ran through gruelling national and continental qualifiers. Adeolu, the reigning 2026 African Spelling Bee Junior Champion, anchored a side that emerged from the Nigeria Spelling Bee and went on to conquer the African Spelling Bee Championship.
Their success on the world stage has been hailed as a watershed moment for Nigerian education, proof that the nation’s youth can compete and win on any intellectual platform.
