Three Nigerian students have won four gold medals at the Grand Finale of the International STEM Olympiad in Rome, marking a historic achievement on the global academic stage.
Don-Anele Munachimso (17) won two gold medals, securing world titles in both Mathematics and Science (Senior division). Egejurum Onyedikachi (11) won gold and emerged as the World’s Best in Mathematics for the Primary Category. Chimdiebube Onwubiko (13) took home gold in Mathematics for the Junior division.
Education advocate Alex Onyia, CEO of Educare, fully sponsored the students’ participation after they topped a regional pool of over 11,500 contestants. “The wait is over. We are the best in the world!” Onyia wrote on X.
The achievement comes amid concerns over Nigeria’s dwindling presence at international academic competitions. Only weeks earlier, Nigeria was downgraded to observer status at the 2026 International Mathematical Olympiad due to funding challenges.
Private sponsorship has now stepped in to fill that gap, proving that Nigerian talent can still dominate the global stage.
